Family Support Worker Helps Strengthen Families
“My role as a family support worker is challenging & rewarding. So far I have worked with 21 families with issues of parenting, truancy and grief over separation or death in the family. Other concerns for families are immigrant settlement issues, the need for food parcels and spirituality matters.
I also liaise with RTLB (Resource Teacher Learning Behaviour), to give additional support”
The work of this truly valuable family support worker is essential to this small school community. A special and important other part of their work has been to also offer support to school staff that have experienced bereavement of family members and sickness, stress and other personal issues.
Many stresses affecting parents and children this year have required the more specialist help of a counsellor and the Family support worker has been the main liaison for this; giving families the additional parenting skills to help with financial and relationship issues. Initially employed to work 15 hours per week, she is working above and beyond this as her caseload increases.
Says the Principal “As a Catholic school that values and celebrates its special character, we are delighted to be able to offer this service to families within the school community who need it”.
CCF has part-funded the salary of a family support worker for two years. This ensures that the school community is strengthening families while working together to solve problems.
