Nurturing Need

We all know how angry we can get sometimes and often don’t know how to help ourselves.

Pakuranga Counselling Centre gives their clients the tools and skills to allow them to deal with anger and other emotions appropriately. Equipped with these strategies and techniques, clients are able to process their feelings as they arise and build and nurture their relationships with friends and family better.

A client of the Centre *Jack, described himself as ‘being like a porcupine as there were so many ‘spikes’ (hurts and losses) in his life. Jack found that each spike hurt a little and when combined, he was left feeling vulnerable and paralysed.

He had become addicted to alcohol to numb his pain and was seriously thinking of suicide. The counsellor enabled him to understand that he was ‘bottling up his emotions and drinking them’.

He needed to ‘open up that bottle’ and let loved ones share it with him. After a few sessions of counselling, Jack let the counsellor know that he was ready to accept ongoing specialised support at an addictions treatment centre. He now feels he is on the road to recovery.

The Catholic Caring Foundation helps subsidise sessions for individuals who cannot meet the full counselling cost when dealing with issues such as domestic violence, addictions and family breakdown. Since 2004, CCF has provided $14,000 to Pakuranga Counselling Centre.
